You think you lead,
but sometimes, you just take up space.
You call it management,
we call it suffocation.
You don’t see it—
the way your “just checking in” feels like surveillance.
The way your tone, even when neutral,
shuts down a room faster than silence ever could.
You think you’re motivating us.
We’re just surviving.
Listen.
Leadership isn’t about authority, it’s about awareness.
It’s about noticing the small things:
The sigh before a meeting.
The hesitation in someone’s idea.
The quiet retreat to corners where you can’t see them.
You need to learn how to reflect.
Not with your ego,
not with excuses,
but with listening.
Really listening.
Ask yourself:
Are people afraid to talk to me?
Do they leave my presence smaller than when they entered?
Do they dread interactions with me more than the work itself?
If the answer is yes,
you are toxic.
Even if unintentionally.
Change doesn’t start with grand gestures.
It starts with noticing.
Then apologizing.
Then adjusting.
Then asking again how to do better.
Create space for feedback.
Invite voices you normally tune out.
Give credit before criticism.
Pause before reacting.
And when someone leaves a meeting quieter than they came in,
ask why, don’t assume.
You have power.
Use it to build.
Not control.
Not dominate.
Your team isn’t your reflection.
They’re people.
And a healthy workplace doesn’t need fear
to function it needs respect,
clarity,
and acknowledgment that you don’t know it all.
Toxicity isn’t a badge.
It’s a blind spot.
Notice it.
Own it.
Fix it.
Because if you can’t,
you will never realize
how much potential you quietly destroy
every single day.
Real leaders don’t demand loyalty they earn trust.
They don’t silence questions, they welcome them.
They understand that the strongest teams are not built on fear of the boss,
but on the freedom to speak truth without punishment.
So look in the mirror, not for validation, but for growth.
