I’ve learned a few things,
Not from books,
And not from the quotes we like to repost.
Instead, it’s from sitting with people,
Listening closely to the stories
That rarely make it to the toast.
In fact, every time I talk to someone now,
I try to meet them there, not here.
So, I match how they move.
If they speak softly, I soften my tone too.
And if they rush, I adjust, like shifting gears on cue.
Why? Because people don’t always remember what you said.
However, they’ll always remember how you made them feel instead.
If they feel seen really seen,
Then they’ll sit with you longer,
And gradually, they’ll open up
Like flowers when the sun gets real and stronger.
One time, I looked a man straight in the eyes.
I didn’t rush.
I didn’t assume.
Rather, I leaned into his space,
Not to intrude,
But just to say, “I’m here too.”
After that, something shifted.
The tone, the flow, it all changed,
Like rhythm finally finding its beat.
He told me, “It’s rare to be understood like this.”
And just like that,
The air around us wasn’t just air it became sweet.
You see, people are drawn to those who “get” them.
Not the ones who fix,
Not the ones who judge,
And certainly not those who trick.
Instead, it’s those who understand,
Who stay present not just with words,
But by listening with both heart and hand.
So now, when I can, I ask real questions.
Questions like, “How did you get here?” or “What made you choose that path?”
Because when people get to talk about themselves,
They light up like sunlight caught in a photograph.
Then they smile.
They boast.
They breathe deeper.
They glow.
And as they speak, I nod slow…
Letting it all flow.
Because the more they talk, the more I know,
And honestly, the more I know, the more I grow.
At times, I also ask for their opinion.
Not necessarily because I need advice,
But because I’ve realized asking is nice.
It shows them their voice carries weight,
That their thoughts aren’t just background noise I tolerate.
And from there…
They lean in.
They commit.
They begin to trust.
Before you know it, we’ve built something,
Something sacred, from ordinary dust.
Also and I can’t stress this enough,
Don’t forget the power of a real compliment.
Not the usual “you look nice” we say in passing,
But the kind that actually lands:
“I see you.”
“I value you.”
“You matter, right now, in this moment, as you stand.”
Sure, it’s old-school, but it still works.
Why? Because people crave appreciation.
Truth is, even I do.
And when someone says, “You did great today,”
I can’t lie, I stand taller too.
So, these days, I carry these lessons like a map in my coat:
Match their tone.
Let them speak.
Ask them why.
Show them they’re seen.
And slowly, just like that,
We go from strangers to something in-between.
Because people aren’t that hard to understand,
As long as you’re willing to meet them where they stand.
We’re all just walking stories waiting to be read,
Not just with ears,
But with our heads and our hearts instead.
So, let’s talk,
Not to respond,
But to relate.
Let’s listen,
Not to win,
But to appreciate.
After all, connection isn’t complicated,
It’s just human.
Of which sometimes, all it really takes
Is showing up…
And speaking like one.

- Learning Through Connection: Genuine understanding comes from listening and engaging with people’s stories, rather than through books or quotes.
